Thanksgiving is this week, and once the clock strikes midnight, holiday gift giving time will start to shift into overdrive. Whether you take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales or not, now is a great time to start planning your holiday shopping lists. As you do, brush up on these gift giving tips so you can put your money and efforts to good use!

Consider their wants.

Your first priority in getting someone a gift should be ensuring that you’re finding something they (not just you) would like. If it’s someone you’re close to, it should be easy to think to their interests, needs, and habits. Do they bake a lot? Maybe a new set of utensils could do them some good. Do they love something particular in sports, pop culture, or literature? Go to the mall and find something that they could use or enjoy that references that.

Communicate.

Of course, the easiest and most practical route is to simply ask your gift recipient what they would want in a gift. Asking them to provide you with a list of options can give you room to find something in your budget that you want to buy. If you want it to be more of a surprise, ask someone you know who knows what they want.

Go for a theme.

Themed gifts are great because the elements in the gift can be used and enjoyed all at once. Remembering their passions, find something that lets them treat themselves to that passion through your gifts. For example, a pair of tickets to the movies with treats and even a copy of a movie they love can be great for film fanatics. And people who love to be outdoors may enjoy a jacket or gloves with some safety gear and a gift card to their favorite outdoors shop. You can also go for experiences as a gift so they can try something they’ve never done before.

Include gift receipts.

Sometimes no matter how much we prepare, a gift has to be returned or exchanged for one reason or another. Before you buy, check the return policy and ask for a gift receipt. Including it will mean the gift doesn’t go unused or it can be enjoyed as intended.
